As a self-employed person, I've had precisely zero financial help in my journey to become a mummy. Cora is now in nursery three days per week so I was interested to read recently about the new Tax-free Childcare being introduced by our government. It's eligible for working parents (including self-employed) who earn between £115 per week and £100,000 per year (per person if you're living with a partner.)
For every £8 you pay into your childcare account, the government will pay in £2 up to a maximum of £2000 government contributions annually. This is effectively 20% off my nursery bill each month... so where do I sign up??
I recently submitted my contact details for a trial before the service is more widely available and yesterday received an invitation to sign up. The process was quick and simple, taking around 20 minutes. I immediately received a secure email saying Cora's childcare account was all set up and ready to go! From the account page online you can find your childcare provider (they have to be registered – ours was!) and pay money into the account. The government contribution is automatically calculated and added when you deposit your own funds and you can pay the childcare provider directly from there.
Finally, a genuinely beneficial service for employed and self-employed parents alike.

The service is currently being trialled but is expected to roll out to everybody who is eligible this year.
